Leotards
Here are a few guidelines on choosing competition leotards just so you don't buy something "illegal":
- Narrow straps are not permitted. Clover leaf and "strappy backs" are also not permitted
- The cut of the leg must not go above the iliac crest (hip bone) and must not drift there during the routine - not must they start or drift between the buttocks.
- The back of the leotard must not go below the scapulae (shoulder blades) and the front must not be lower than half way down the sternum.
- The back must not be exposed and flesh colour material giving the appearance of large areas of nakedness (eg the trunk) are forbidden
- Design or transparency must not allow undergarments, trunk, navel or other private parts to be seen.
- Theatrical and religious themes, cabaret, bikini and swimsuit styles are not allowed. Pictures in the design and character outfits (eg waiters, sailors) are forbidden
I hope the above helps when choosing competition leotards, however don't feel you have to purchase new leotards - Claire and Anita have a number of pair/group leotards for hire. Just ask. Cost is £1-£2 per leotard, per competition - the gymnast just has to wear the leotard and return it, unwashed: Anita/Claire will do the washing.
A few other competition pointers:
Jewellery, including earrings and studs, necklaces, rings, nose and naval studs are not allowed - they cannot be taped either.
Hairclips, slides, bands and ribbons (if worn) must be secure: they lose marks if they fall out. Character hair accessors, eg tiaras, feathers and flowers, are not allowed.
Face painting is not allowed and make-up, whilst not forbidden, must be modest. There's nothing worse than "painted dolls" on the competition floor. One would expect adults and teenagers to have a certain amount of make-up but little girls plastered in it does not look good. They're gymnasts after all.
